Youth Diversion.
The Youth Diversion Program (YDP) is designed to achieve prevention and intervention goals among youth who are harmfully involved with alcohol or drugs.
It is likely to be most effective for youth ages 12-18. On the prevention level, TDP works to reduce the risk of both impairment (such as drinking and driving crashes or unplanned pregnancy) and alcohol related health problems.
On the intervention level, the program works to interrupt the progression into alcoholism and chemical dependency.
Accomplishing one or more of the following objectives acheives these goals.
-
increasing the incidence of abstinence among adolescents, as a permanent lifestyle choice;
-
for those non-addicted adolescents who don't choose abstinence for the rest of their lives, increasing the incidences of returning to abstinence at least until they are older;
-
for youth who are not chemically dependent and who do not return to abstinence despite the law, parental expectations and encouragement to do so, decreasing high risk use;
-
Facilitating acceptance of referral for treatment among adolescents who abuse chemical or have other treatment needs.
Targeted groups for the curriculum include students who have violated the school's alcohol and drug policy, students concerned about their own alcohol or drug use, court referred youth and students in alternative schools or day treatment programs.
All parents and guardians are encouraged to attend with their child. Most students are referred through Juvenile Court.
